The publication of this volume represents a precious contribution to the historical traditions of the municipal territory of Reggello. The little Vallombrosa train is an integrated part of the uses and traditions of this wonderful part of Italy. The story of Vallombrosa begins with a young Florentine nobleman, born in the eleventh century. After giving up revenge on his parents' murderers, he forgave them and became a monk. His name was Giovanni Gualberto and was the monk who built the small cloister around the abbey located in an area called Vallombrosa. About thirty kilometers from the city of Firenze, Vallombrosa is found on the Pratomagno mountain, and is renowned as a small vacation spot. One kilometer away from Vallombrosa one finds Saltino, a small town which seems like a terrace over the Arno valley. Over eight hundred years later in the nineteenth century the story continues with the beginning of the little Vallombrosa train, a railroad from Sant'Ellero to Saltino. It was in 1881 when the engineer Count Giuseppe Telfener had a vacation in Vallombrosa, in those times still reserved for a few privileged. He was so impressed with the spot that he decided to invest his capital in a residence for himself in this paradise. This book - with Italian, English and German text - retrace the story of the challenging rackwheel train track and its little train that from Sant'Ellero reached the heart of Vallombrosa, with a step by step description of an excursion that discovers how much of the old train course remains.
